Topic: Mangroves for the Future
Description: Nature has its own security mechanisms, and they work very well for humans, if they do not mess with them. However, that is not always the case. When Nature strikes back, the results can be devastating! Mangroves, that grow along the coasts are one such protective barrier, and during the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, people learnt to their cost the result of denuding this forest cover.
Mangrovs for the Future was a programme that was launched to assist the countries that had been hit by the Tsunami, and then its circle was widened to include other South Asian countries. Pakistan has recently become a member of the MFF, and its Regional Coordinator, Steen Christensen was here recently to attend a couple of programmes of its small grantees. He explains the mandate of MFF.
What do you know about the importance of the mangroves?
If you live along the coast, have you ever been to a mangrove stand? What did you see there?
