With so much going on around us that triggers worry and anxiety, it is heartening to wake up a news of an unsung hero being honoured for his efforts to save the natural environment. He is none other than the late Tahir Qureshi, known far as wide as Baba e Mangroves
Today, on #WorldMangrovesDay The Balochistan and Wildlife Department honoured him by dedicating a site in Miani Hor Protected Forest to him and intending to create a mangrove arboratum that will be accessible to foresters and general visitors from the sea as well as by road. It will have seasonal plantation activities as well as a space to create a seedbank for the mangrove species found in Balochistan, which had benefitted from the efforts of late Tahir Qureshi who not only created and nurtured these mangrove stands but also trained some very able and dedicated environmentalists who carried forward his legacy.
As can be seen from these maps produced as a result of research by Dr. Hammad Gilani, Regional Researcher – Remote Sensing and GIS, IWMI-Pakistan.
